Facets of Faith: Am I The Product Of My Environment?

This is a picture I took of a sedimentary rock on the side of the road next to the gutter and some garbage.

A conversation with a friend at work yesterday provoked a thought about the phrase “You are a product of your environment” when used to justify stagnated progression or describe someone's willingness/ability to rise above their circumstances. The use of it in conversation sounded like we have all been assigned a caste! But by who? And is that actually true?

I have thought about how some cultures teach this and people believe it in that way. In a well-meaning pop song I heard performed on TV last night includes the lyrics “And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart.” I am taking this line out of context purposefully, but I couldn’t help but think of this philosophy and wonder if people associate it's intended meaning. Even further in the popular Disney movie “Frozen”, Bulda a rock troll sings “We’re not saying you can change him, ’Cause people don’t really change.” Who wrote that into the script for children?

people holding rodThis idea is just plain and simple - FALSE and is a philosophy akin to the garbage in the background of my picture. I love the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The heavens are open and we can hear truth from men with Priesthood keys and pray for ourselves to receive confirmations. We don’t have to be deceived by “mists of darkness” or bad philosophies.

We have been bought with a price and have been given the gift of moral agency. We don’t have to have an injured mentality or be a product of our environment in that sense, because people CAN change and they do every day. People fly above the clouds and enjoy the view in the same environment as others searching for frothy mud in the gutters. Focus, vision, hope, and good ole fashion hard work is what matters.

As a matter of fact, people change for better and for worse. Think about yourself. Are you the same person you were 10 years ago? 5 years ago? How about even 1 year ago?

Anyone can change and can change their environment. I agree you are influenced by the world around you but ultimately we are not objects that need to be acted upon. You can't choose IF you are influenced but you get to choose your influencers. We are humans that have the capacity for growth and thought. This rock is an object to be acted upon. It is a product of its environment. Consider these quotes from modern prophets of God.

Image result for thomas s monsonPresident Thomas S Monson related this story back in 2012 in his talk titled See Others as They May Become: “During the 1940s and 1950s, an American prison warden, Clinton Duffy, was well known for his efforts to rehabilitate the men in his prison. Said one critic, “You should know that leopards don’t change their spots!” Replied Warden Duffy, “You should know I don’t work with leopards. I work with men, and men change every day.”
Elder David A. Bednar in 2007 also taught us, “In the grand vision of all of God’s creations there are things to act, and things to be acted upon. As sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father, we have been blessed with the gift of moral agency, the capacity for independent action and choice. Endowed with agency, you and I are agents, and we primarily are to act and not just be acted upon. To believe that someone or something can make us feel offended, angry, hurt, or bitter diminishes our moral agency and transforms us into objects to be acted upon. As agents, however, you and I have the power to act and to choose how we will respond to an offensive or hurtful situation”

So choose the environment that will best develop you toward your objective. Analyze your life in terms of its environment. Are the things around you helping you toward success - or are they holding you back?" Stone was successful in insurance and a huge advocate of having a Positive Mental Attitude.

He also said: "Regardless of what you are or have been, you can still become what you want to be." In context, it sounds like it was meant to be some solid advice and not an excuse to be a chump.

I love that we are not like this rock. I am not stuck in my environment and I can choose to elevate my mind with my “finest thoughts” as a friend always says. I hope you and I never subscribe to a "sucker of our circumstances" mindset and instead - ACT. This rock will continue to sit here as long as no one else moves it - next to the gutter with all that garbage in the background. It can’t think, it can’t move, and it has no spirit - unlike you and me. Fly above the clouds because you are stronger than your excuses....unless you take Disney rock trolls as your mentor.
