The new Elantra Touring replacement will be dubbed as the Elantra GT. There was a short run of Elantra hatches a few ago that....bore the GT badging. Whenever we get an Elantra GT on the lot they are usually gone within a few days. The GT was a fun car with a sportier feeling shifter, suspension, and optional leather and sunroof. They also made a sedan version that wasn't as popular.
The Elantra Touring has been a very popular model in Europe but has been a lower production model here in the U.S. With the introduction of the GT badging the wagon variant will still be able to play off the very popular Elantra sedan while branching out to a more mainstream market of hatch/wagon lovers that the Mazda3 and Subaru have been catering to for years now. Hyundai has been projected to become the world's #1 automaker by 2015-16 and this is a winning vehicle that will help it hit a home run once again. The Elantra GT should hit dealerships April/May 2012.
